The Washington State University Elk Research Facility located on the WSU Pullman Campus was designed and constructed to allow for the study of Wild Elk, and more specifically Elk Hood disease. The facility consisted of covered isolation pens for each elk, sorting facilities, and double fenced fields to allow for the elk to roam. The isolation pens were designed with the ability to drain liquid waste from the pens, with the ability to scoop out solid waste and completely wash out each of the pens between uses. The building and site were designed in coordination to allow for the liquid waste to drain to sanitary sewer drain basins and were routed to the sanitary sewer system, while limiting the amount of stormwater routed to the drains as to not overwhelm the sanitary sewer system with stormwater.
